The land at the heart of national reconciliation

Since the beginning of the country’s political transition, the fate of the peasants should have improved. However, the opposite has occurred! The grabbing of farmers’ land is taking place on an unprecedented scale.

The military, their cronies and local administrations are waiting patiently for foreign companies to invest in the country.

With 70% of the population depending on the land for its livelihood, access to land is a key element in Burma's economic development.

Its management by the authorities and the legal framework that defines it is crucial, yet the rule of law did not exist for the majority of the population during 50 years of dictatorship.
